So it seems that my Dell Latitude D620 could not play encrypted DVDs (you know, most of the movie DVDs that are sold in stores). The solution was to install libdvdcss2 from the Ubuntu media repositories and, in the end, I can only play the DVDs from a command line player called "ogle". And this is why Linux is not ready for my mother.
